In 1967, Mehegan broke into television as a writer and news producer at Boston’s WBZ-TV. He went on to on-air reporting and anchoring in a tumultuous 14-year period in Boston, marked by violent student protests, and the desegregation of the public schools.
In 1980, Mehegan was awarded an Emmy for outstanding news reporting for his coverage of protests at the Seabrook, New Hampshire nuclear power plant. In 2002, he received a Columbia-Dupont award for coverage of Boston’s Big Dig.
In 1981, Mehegan moved to Boston’s WCVB-TV where he continued work as a news reporter and anchor. He was chosen as co-anchor of the Chronicle news magazine in 1982. He would spend 23 years with Chronicle, a virtual lifetime for a single television assignment. He and co-anchor Mary Richardson were one of the city’s best loved teams, not surprising for two broadcast professionals who were also good friends.
Mehegan traveled the world for Chronicle including assignments in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. He covered two Winter Olympics; traced his family roots on-camera in Ireland and the Outer Hebrides of Scotland; sat in the cockpit of the Concorde on landing in London; even snowmobiled on a glacier in Iceland. “It was all great fun,” Mehegan said. “I had the best job in the world.”
Mehegan was one of the few Boston television personalities actually born in the city. His father was third-generation South Boston; his mother grew up in the old West End. He was Dorchester born and bred but spent his later youth in the coastal town of Scituate, Massachusetts. He and Julianne, his wife of some 45 years raised four daughters in the town.
In 2005, Mehegan retired from the Chronicle anchor desk. “I had a new assignment,” he said. “I’m now a grandfather to six small children.”
The Evening of Sharing and Caring will be held on Tuesday, September 22 at the Andover Country Club. The gala will also honor Joseph S. McManus with the presentation of the Pilgrimage of Love Award. Mehegan’s appearance has been made possible through the generous support of KDSA Consulting. |
